Sometimes, our dreams are very difficult to achieve. Here, however, we are going to read about someone who made his dreams come true.
Ishikawa Naoki was a high school student who loved learning about foreign places. He often imagined adventures abroad by himself.
One day, in a world history class, the teacher talked about his trip to India. Naoki was loved the stories of the strange food that was eaten there. He dreamed of the busy markets that were full of people. He wanted so much to visit the country himself!
Naoki found a part-time job and began to save all his money. His parents were worried about his plan, but he was determined. In the summer vacation of 1994, he picked up his small black backpack and left for adventure.
Part １
私たちの夢は実現するのが難しいことが時々あります。でも、ここでは、自分の夢を実現したある人の話を読もうとしています。
石川直樹は外国の場所について学ぶのが大好きな高校生でした。ひとりで海外での冒険（海外で冒険するのを）想像することがよくありました。
ある日、世界史の授業で、先生がインドへ旅行したことについて話しました。直樹はインドで食べられていた（わたしたちにとっては不思議な）なじみのない食べ物の話が（話を聞くのが）大好きでした。彼は人で溢れる活気のある市場の夢を見ました。彼はそれほどまでに、インドをひとりで訪れたかったのです。
直樹はアルバイトを見つけ（稼いだ）お金をすべて貯金し始めました。両親は彼の計画を心配しましたが、彼の決意は固かったのです。1994年の夏休みに、バックパック（リュックサック）を手に取り、インドに向けて旅立ちました。
Part2
Naoki was surprised by what he saw in India: dead bodies floating in the Ganges, children living in the streets, cows and elephants walking around freely. How different it all was from Japan!
On the trip, he visited not only India but also Nepal. The trip changed him. It opened his eyes to the world. When he returned to Japan, he saw his home country very differently.
After entering university, Naoki traveled often in his vacations. He became very interested in photography. For most people, photography is just a way of keeping memories. But for Naoki, it was much more than that. By studying his photos carefully, he was able to make new discoveries.

直樹はインドで目にしたもの ― ガンジス川に浮かぶ（いくつもの）死体、路上で生活している子供たち（ストリートチルドレン）、自由にあたりを歩く牛や象 ― にとても驚きました。なんてすべてのことが日本と異なるだろうか。
この旅で、彼はインドだけでなく、ネパールも訪れました。旅が彼を変えたのです。旅は彼の眼を世界に向けて開かせたのです（旅のおかげで、世界に目を向けられるようになったのです）。日本に帰国した際、彼は祖国日本が（インドとは）とても異なっているように見えました。
大学に入学したのち、直樹は休暇中によく旅行をしました。彼は写真にとても興味を持つようになりました。たいていの人にとって、写真は記憶を残しておく手段に過ぎませんが、しかし、直樹にとって、それ以上のことでした（記憶を保存することだけではありませんでした）。自分のとった写真を注意深く検証することで、彼は新たな発見をすることができたのです。

In the year 2000, Naoki took part in a project called “Pole to Pole 2000.” For this project, he joined seven young men and women whose home countries were almost all different went. Their plan was to go from the North Pole to the South Pole. They could only use their own power —skiing, cycling, kayaking, and walking.
During the trip, they held meetings called “love-hate sessions.” They talked about what they liked and disliked about other members. This helped them to understand each other better.
Naoki wrote reports about their trip and put them on his website with photos. People around the world saw his reports and pictures. They enjoyed reading about the group’s adventures. On December 31st, 2000, Naoki stood at the South Pole. It was exciting to be in such a special place on such a special day.
Part 3
2000年に直樹は「極から極まで2000」 “Pole to Pole 2000”と呼ばれるプロジェクト（企画）に参加しました。このプロジェクトでは、ほとんど国（籍）の異なる7人の若い男女に（彼は）加わりました（このプロジェクトでは、8人の若い男女が参加しました）。彼らの計画は北極から南極まで行くことでした。自分たちの力だけでを使うことができたのです―スキーをし、自転車に乗り、カヤックを漕ぎ、歩いたのです（（自分たちの力 ― スキーすること、自転車に乗ること、カヤックを漕ぐこと、歩くこと ― だけを使うことが可能だったのです。）

In 2001, on May 23rd, Naoki was again somewhere very special: at the top of Mt. Everest, the world’s highest mountain. He was there after climbing the other six of the Seven Summits — the highest mountains on the seven continents. The wind was calm, and the sky was a clear blue. He looked around. He was at the highest point on the planet! It was a wonderful thing.
These days, Naoki continues to travel and explore the world. He has become well known not only for his travels but also for his photographs. In an interview in 2010, Naoki said, “There are still so many places I haven’t been to and haven’t seen.” Even to a man like Ishikawa Naoki, the world’s a big, big place.

2001年5月23日、直樹は再び、どこかとても特別な場所にいました。世界最高峰のエベレストの頂上にいたのです。七大陸最高峰――７つの大陸それぞれで一番高い山――のうち他の６峰を全部登った後で、エベレスト山頂にいたのです。風は穏やかで、空は鮮やかな青でした。直樹は周りを見回しました。地球上で他のどんな場所よりも高かった！ それは最高の気分でした。
直樹は世界中を旅し、探検し続けます。冒険家としてだけではなく、写真家としてもよく知られるようになってきています。2010年のインタビューで、直樹はこう言いました。「まだ行っていない、見ていない場所がとてもたくさんあります。」 石川直樹のような探検家にとってさえ、世界は広く大きい場所なのです。
