LESSON1 The Power of Vision and Hard Work

Part1

I have faced many difficulties in my career, <both before and after I became

a researcher.> I’m going to tell you how I got over them.

First, I will tell you about the course of my career to date. My favorite

subjects in high school were math and science. I didn’t (-) just study hard, though.

My greatest love was judo. I practiced for hours each day and even competed

in a high school championship in Osaka Prefecture. I was always injuring(-)

myself in judo practice. I broke a bone (-) more than once and was treated

by an orthopedic surgeon. That experience sparked my interest in sports

medicine, and I decided to become an orthopedic surgeon myself.

I graduated from medical school and started training as an orthopedic

surgeon, but my dreams were soon crushed.(-) It once took me two hours

to complete an operation that any other surgeon could do in twenty

minutes.(-)

My supervisors, the nurses, and even the patient couldn’t believe how slow

I was. “I’ll never be a good surgeon,” I told myself sadly. That was the first

big setback (-) in my life.

As I became aware of my own limitations, I also became aware of the

limitations of modern medicine. As I treated various patients, I came to

realize/ there were diseases that even the best doctors in the world could

not cure. Even so, I wanted to discover a way to cure such diseases. I

therefore made up my mind to become a researcher and find out the

causes of diseases in a laboratory, instead of treating patients in a hospital.

Part3

I put all my efforts into my research work. It was interesting, but there

were also many difficulties. When scientists have an idea, they conduct

experiments to find out whether it is right. Almost every experiment I did,

though, ended in failure. I often spent months doing experiments, but I

still couldn’t get any data to support my hypotheses.

Though I did almost every experiment, it ended in failure.

A seeming failure, however, can be the key to a breakthrough. I will

give you an example. Once I got a completely unexpected result to one

of my experiments. At first I was disappointed, but after some time I

became excited. Thanks to some unexpected results, I gradually got

the idea to pursue a new area of research: creating iPS cells. And after

several years of hard work, our research team finally succeeded in

creating iPS cells.

Part4

The following words have always inspired me: vision and hard work. You

need to have a clear vision of your goal and work hard to reach it. You

also need to have resilience. It means the ability to respond flexibly to

changing situations and to recover from difficulties.

Throughout my career I’ve always had a single vision ― to cure patients

― and I do everything to achieve it. When I hit a wallI don’t just give

up; I find a way around it.

When things get hard for you in life or at school, remember the magic

words “vision” and “hard work”. They will help you achieve almost anything.

 常にresilience(状況に対して柔軟に対応する能力)とvisionhard workが必要で、
