自分で勉強習慣をつけてしっかりと勉強してください。

今回は、きれいな夜空のお話で、
やはり、星空がきれいなのは、幻想的でいいですね。

Bright Stars in a Dark Sky—Takepo
Part1
New Zealand has a lot of natural beauty. It is famous for its
mountains and rivers. It also has a wonderful night sky.
ニュージーランドにはたくさんの自然美があります。山と川が有名です。
また素晴らしい夜空があります。
In the center of New Zealand’s South Island, there is a small
town called Tekapo. It’s a popular place for tourists. They loved
to stay at Lake Tekapo and look at its beautiful blue water.
ニュージーランドの南島の中央に、テカポと呼ばれる小さな町が
あります。そこは旅行者に人気のある場所です。彼らはテカポ湖に
滞在して、その青い湖水をみるのが好きです。
These days, many tourists also come to see the stars. Why?
Tekapo is high in the mountains. The air is fresh and clear.
There are no lights from nearby cities. For these reasons, the
night sky is bright with stars.
近頃、旅行者の多くは星を見に行くこともします。なぜかって。
（それは）テカポは山の高所にあるからです。空気は新鮮できれいです。
近くの町明かりもありません。これらの理由で、夜空は星で輝いています。
With such a beautiful night sky, Tekapo is a good place to observe
the stars. In the 1960s, scientists put a big telescope at the top
of a mountain next to the lake. They have used the telescope
to learn more about the universe.
そのような美しい夜空があるので、テカポは星を見るのにいい場所です。
1960年代に、科学者たちはテカポ湖の隣の山の頂上に巨大望遠鏡を設置
しました。彼らは宇宙をさらに知るためにその望遠鏡を使っています。
Part2
The people of Tekapo play an important part in keeping the
night sky beautiful. They try hard to make the town dark at
night. They shut their curtains in the evening. They also put
special covers on the street lights.
テカポの人々は夜空を美しく保っておくのに重要な役割を果たしています。
彼らは夜には町を暗くしようと頑張っています。夕方にはカーテンを閉めて
います。街灯に特別なカバー（覆い）をかけることもします。
At one time, however, the night sky was in danger. Around the
year 2000, there was a plan to develop the town of Tekapo. The
idea was to set up a new shopping area.
しかし、ある時、夜空が危険な状態になっていました〔危険にさらされ
ていました〕。2000年ごろテカポの町を開発する計画がありました。その
考えは新たな商店街を作ることでした。
At first, many of the people in Tekapo seemed to support the
plan. It meant more jobs in the town. It also meant a more
convenient life.
最初は、テカポの人々の多くはその計画を支持するようでした。
それは町に仕事が増えることを意味しました。またより快適な生活を意味
しました。
But a few people didn’t like the plan. The scientists were worried
about the loss of the dark night sky. It was necessary for their work.
Travel companies were worried, too. They were afraid of losing
their tourists.
しかし少数の人たちはその計画が好きではありませんでした。彼らは
旅行者を失うことを恐れていました。
Part3
One such person was Ozawa Hideyuki. He had been running
a travel company in Tekapo for some years. During that time,
he had brought many Japanese tourists to see the beautiful
night sky. It was something they could not see back home.
一人の反対者が小澤英之（さん）でした。彼は数年間テカポで旅行会社
を経営していました。その間、彼は多くの日本人旅行客をきれいな夜空を
見るために連れてきました。それは彼らが故郷に戻って見ることのでき
ないものです。
Ozawa knew that Tekapo’s night sky was much more important
than a shopping area. To save the sky, he came up with a new
idea. He decided to ask UNESCO to put it on its World Heritage
list.
This was something nobody had ever thought of before. Some
people said that it was a strange idea. However, the plan attracted
the attention of someone important ― a former minister in the
New Zealand government. Her name was Margaret Austin. She
agreed with Ozawa and said that she wanted to help him.
小澤はテカポの夜空は商店街より重要だったのを知っていました。
夜空を守るために、新たな案をあkンがえだしました。からはユネスコ
にそれ（テカポの夜空）を世界遺産のリストに掲載するように頼むこと
を決めました。
これは、以前誰もまったく考えたことのないものでした。それは変わった
考えだと言う人もいました。しかし、その計画は重要人物 ― ニュージー
ランド政府の前大臣―の注意を引きつけました。彼女の名はマーガレット
オースチンでした。彼女は小澤に賛同し、彼を援助したいといいました。
Part4
Can the night sky really be part of the heritage of the world?
With the support of Margaret Austin, the idea became more popular
and, in 2010, UNESCO began to discuss it.
テカポの夜空は本当に世界遺産の一部になりえるだろうか。マーガレット
オースチンの支援で、その考えはもっと評判がよくなり（人気が出て）、
2010年に、ユネスコは議論し始めました。
The discussions helped to make the town more famous. In June
2012, the International Dark-Sky Association chose Tekapo’s night
sky as its fourth Dark Sky Reserve. It seems that they were very
impressed ― they gave it “gold status.” This meant that Tekapo
was one of the best places in the world to see the night sky.
議論は町をもっと有名にするのに役立ちました。2012年6月に、国際
ダークスカイ協会はテカポの夜空をダーク協会の４番目の夜空保護地区に
選びました。彼らはとても感銘を受けたようです。それに「ゴールド
ステイタス」を与えたのでした。これは、テカポは世界で夜空を見るため
の最高の場所の一つであるということを意味するのです。
In most big cities these days, people can’t see the stars at night
because there is too much light. If you want to see lots of beautiful
stars, why not visit Tekapo for yourself?
最近のほとんどの大都市の中では、明かりが多すぎて人々は夜に星を見る
ことができません。もしたくさんのきれいな星を見たいなら、一人でテカポ
を訪れたらどうですか。
